The History of the Phonograph

The Phonograph emerged and was developed as an idea during Thomas Edison's work on two other inventions: the telegraph and the telephone. In 1877, Edison was working on a machine that would translate telegraph messages into indentations on paper tape so they could be repeatedly transmitted over the telegraph later.
