The world does not need another fintech platform. Ethereum is attempting something harder, a system that can grow & innovate while preserving the ability for users to walk away
Exit is what keeps systems honest. When users can leave without losing their assets, access, or economic opportunity, intermediaries can’t arbitrarily change the rules or extract unlimited value. Look at email. Gmail is free, there are no ads between emails, & there’s no algorithm trying to make you addicted because users can easily switch email providers. When exit disappears, systems gradually drift toward lock-in & extraction
However, most people have spent their entire digital lives inside platforms where they own nothing and can’t leave, so the absence of exit barely registers as a problem. It simply feels normal. Because of that, markets consistently underprice it
Markets are very good at optimizing for convenience & growth. Builders who take centralized shortcuts can ship faster & capture usage more quickly. That tension is real, & every builder in this ecosystem feels it
Someone has to protect the parts the market won’t. This is where the Ethereum Foundation has a role to play. As a nonprofit focused on Ethereum’s long-term mission, the EF can invest in the parts of the system the market is least likely to defend on its own & support the builders working to preserve those properties
None of this means Ethereum is abandoning mass adoption. We need builders pushing adoption, improving UX, & bringing this technology into the real world. But we also need builders protecting the properties that make Ethereum different: open source, credible exit, privacy, and decentralization

We are at a once in a century transition where humanity is moving its institutions online. If we get this wrong, we trade thousands of years of hard won freedoms in the physical world for opaque digital gatekeepers
Scammers flow to wherever consequences are weakest. Since blockchains emerged, many flowed here. That will not always be true. The foundation being built today will outlast them
The long term value is infrastructure that lets anyone build applications and financial systems that cannot be censored, quietly rewritten, inflated away, or shut down, even if companies, governments, or developers disappear

Credible neutrality should live at the blockchain layer. Every transaction treated the same. And if you’re designing mechanisms, make them credibly neutral (if possible)
Ethereum uniquely already offers neutral blockspace and a neutral app ecosystem. So be different on top of it

Most people probably don't know Bastian. That is intentional. He has largely stayed out of the noise, focused on the kind of foundational work at EF that doesn't show up on crypto twitter
I've worked closely with him since I joined the EF two years ago. He is one of the rare people who combines long term strategic thinking with real clarity. When you are in a meeting with him, you genuinely leave with your thinking sharpened
From the beginning, he helped me deeply understand the role of the EF, where it was two years ago and where it was going. He was largely right about that direction, which is impressive in an industry so dynamic. He also refined my thinking around what the EF can uniquely do to help unblock entire use case categories that have not yet found traction
Tomasz expanded the overton window of what the EF could be at a critical time. I am confident that Bastian, alongside Hsiao-Wei, can now take that expanded mandate and translate it into focused execution for the next phase of Ethereum’s growth

I’ve been at the EF both before and after Tomasz stepped in as co-ED. The values are the same, but the organization is now much more aligned with where Ethereum is in its lifecycle
There’s been a clear shift from primarily infra-focused to deeper support for applications and ecosystem growth. A lot of that evolution came from his leadership

I actually see it pretty differently. A few years ago it really did feel like 95/5 infrastructure. Another rollup, another chain, account/chain abstraction, endless arguing about the rollup centric roadmap. That was all you saw
Now it feels much closer to 60/40 in favor of applications. Look at a general crypto podcast like @rolluptv.base.eth ( https://www.youtube.com/@TheRollupCo/videos). A huge share of what they cover now is stablecoins, prediction markets, tokenization, neobanking, perps, and real DeFi products. That is a very different conversation than a few years ago when it was mostly scaling mechanics and L1 vs L2 debates
Real world Ethereum is not theoretical anymore. It is here, and the attention is following it. Part of my job is to keep pushing that balance even further toward applications and real usage
